Power Simhadri Plant: Technical snag likely to persist Our Bureau
VISAKHAPATNAM, May 12 THE Simhadri power plant at Parwada has been facing problems since April 20 and was often forced to stop generation "due to problems cropping up in the transmission system caused by the salinity in the atmosphere and consequent failure of the insulators on the lines". NTPC officials explained to presspersons at the plant on Monday that the power "is evacuated from the power station switch yard to the APTransco Kalapaka sub-station by four numbers of 400 KV transmission lines. From the night of April 20, we are observing line faults". It was found that line insulators were developing a snag, technically known as tracking, and there were sparks on the line. This snag in turn would affect the Simhadri generators and reduce their lifespan. Therefore, the best option was to shut down generation, whenever such a problem occurred. NTPC officials anticipate that the problem may persist for sometime and abate after the onset of the monsoon. APTransco was doing its best to keep transmission lines in order. About remedial measures, they said the insulators on the transmission lines would have to be physically cleaned, which was a laborious process, or silicon grease has to be applied. APTransco was taking the necessary steps to prevent recurrence.
