Awards & Honours Shantha Biotech bags tech award Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, May 12 SHANTHA Biotechnics Pvt Ltd (SBPL), the Hyderabad-based company into genetic engineering, has bagged the National Technology Award-2003 for the second time for `successful commercialisation of indigenous technology.' The award was handed over by the Vice-President, Mr Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, to the SBPL Managing Director, Mr Varaprasad Reddy, in New Delhi. In a press release here, SBPL said it won the keenly contested award for the successful development, manufacture and marketing of Shanferon, a recombinant human Interferon Alpha 2B indicated for chronic myeloid leukaemia, chronic viral hepatitis and other cancers. According to the company, Shanferon was the only interferon to be developed, manufactured and marketed by an Indian biotechnology company. According to the company, Shanferon found immediate acceptance from gastroenterologists and oncologists for indications of various cancers. Over 1,000 patients were benefited from this affordable interferon, a safe and cost-effective alternative to expensive MNC brands, the company claimed. Shantha said it was now poised to obtain a process patent for the Shanferon technology in several countries with its international application for a patent already published by Patent
