Trade & Labour Unions General strike likely to hit production Independent trade unions join in Our Bureau
CHENNAI, May 20 PRODUCTION at major industrial belts in Chennai and its suburbs is likely to be affected as independent trade unions have agreed to participate in the general strike called by the central trade unions on Wednesday. The National Secretary of CITU, Mr A.K. Padmanabhan, told Business Line that workers belonging to the various industrial unions, the ports in Chennai and Tuticorin, and Central Government offices, including the offices of the Accountant General, insurance, income tax and posts, are to participate in the strike. Workers in the four power generation units at Kalpakkam and defence establishments in Avadi will also participate, he said. However, according to a joint press release from the Madras Port Trust unions, the HMS, AITUC, CITU and independent trade unions, essential services such as fire and medical services will operate normally. The State Government-run transport services and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will be partly affected with the CITU workers taking part in the strike. In the unorganised sector, among the sections in which CITU is the major uniting factor, such as agricultural and construction workers and auto rickshaw drivers, widespread participation is expected. The agricultural workers will organise road and rail rokos, Mr Padmanabhan said. Following a meeting with the industrial union representatives in Chennai, the workers in industrial units have also agreed to strike work, he said. The strike call is to protest the Central Government's policies relating to privatisation of public sector enterprises, proposed amendments to the labour laws and reduction in interest paid on provident funds. The workers are also demanding for a comprehensive legislation for agriculture workers and social security. In addition, in Tamil Nadu the protest is also against inadequate relief measures announced by the Centre following the drought, Mr Padmanabhan said.
