Infrastructure Two firms shortlisted for AP electronic hardware park V. Rishi Kumar
HYDERABAD, May 20 AFTER nearly two years of sustained efforts and several offers to rope in developers as strategic partners for the proposed Electronic Hardware Park at Mamidipally near the Shamshabad international airport, the project is set to take off shortly with the Government recently choosing two firms. The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, the nodal agency for the development of the hardware park adjacent the international airport, has recently chosen Mumbai-based Zoom Developers and Singapore-based Jurong Town Corporation as project developers, according to Government sources. Consequent on the terrorist attack leading to slowdown in the economy and subdued investment scenario, the APIIC bids received extremely tepid response. It had extended the date to rope in strategic players several times and in fact re-advertised since the project was to be taken up in phases through public private partnership model. Under the PPP model, while the State Government would contribute in the form land towards its equity and other related infrastructure, the private strategic partner will bring in the necessary investments and take up designs and feasibility studies and eventually develop the project. Already several major corporations have evinced interest in the park and this includes Maxima Corporation. Along side this, a few domestic companies as Videocon International, Astra Microwave, and Team Asia Semiconductor are set to locate their facilities. Recently, Astra Microwave has announced a communication sub-system manufacturing base. AP had conceptualised the park to promote the neglected hardware sector and also announced a policy framework in consultation with McKinsey & Co. The park, to be located adjacent the greenfield airport, will eventually be located in the special economic zone in order to avail of certain concessions that will make the park companies extremely competitive in the international market, sources said.
