`Trade can bring India, Bangladesh closer'

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, May 20.

THE Minister of Finance and Planning of Bangladesh, Mr M. Saifur Rahman, today expressed the hope that trade, commerce and investments could bring India and Bangladesh closer.

Addressing captains of industry, Mr Rahman said that trade and investment could form the basis of a new vision for the countries in the subcontinent, which could boost cooperation and in turn become the uniting factor in bilateral and multilateral relations. The meeting had been organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The Minister underlined Bangladesh's firm commitment to free trade with India as well with other countries. He further said that in the age of globalisation and liberalisation all discriminatory policies should be eliminated. In this regard, he also urged India to look into its internal policies so as to promote bilateral trade between the two countries and in turn allow more Bangladeshi exports into India.

In his address, the Minister firmly stated Bangladesh's resolve to have good relations with India. He said that one of the ways to mutually benefit industry on both sides could be the formation of joint ventures between the two countries. Mr Rahman said that some policy initiatives could be taken by both the sides including the building of a mechanism for free trade.
