Airlines Rs 40-cr package for development of Kochi airport Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, June 30 THE Board of Directors of the Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has approved an Rs 40-crore package for the development of the airport. The schemes approved by the board include a proposal to expand the airport's existing terminal and the construction of a parallel taxi track, said an official press release. The board has sanctioned Rs 20 crore for the expansion of the airport's terminal building, the release said. This expansion will enable the terminal to handle some 700-odd passengers at a time against the current figure of 400, the release added. Other development initiatives approved by the board include Rs 14.5 crore for the construction of the parallel taxi track and Rs 3 crore for the expansion of the apron, said the release. Another decision taken by the board was to set up a sub-committee to attend to urgent matters connected with the airport. The Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, chaired the meeting, which was attended, among others, by the State's Finance Minister, Mr K. Sankaranarayanan, the Industries Minister, Mr P.K. Kunhalikutty, and the Tourism and Fisheries Minister, Mr K.V. Thomas. The CIAL, which had incurred a loss of Rs 18.01 crore in fiscal 2001-02, turned profitable in the last financial year with a profit of Rs 6.92 crore.
