CII team to press for changes in UK work permit rules

NEW DELHI, June 30

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is taking a delegation of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) to the UK, which will take up the need to change the work permit rules in the UK.

The 16-member mission is being led by Mr Anand Mahindra, President of CII and Vice-Chairman & Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra. It is co-led by Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, Co-Chairman, Indo-British Partnership and Chairman and Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies. The delegation will visit the UK from June 30 to July 2.

The delegation will meet senior representatives of the UK administration and business leaders in London to also discuss the way forward for strengthening trade and investment relations with the UK, a CII statement said here.

The Professional Contractors Group (PCG) had recommended changes in the work permits rules, which if implemented, can be viewed as creation of a non-trade barrier and will adversely affect Indian companies doing business in UK. This is because, according to the recommendations, Indian companies will not be able to bring in their employees from India and other countries to the UK to work on Projects.

PCG wants the local job market to be tapped first and then if the skills are not found, employees can be brought from other countries.
