Air Canada may resume services to India

Santanu Sanyal

Kolkata , July 22

AIR Canada is planning to resume its service to India, according to informed sources. The proposed service, to be operated daily between Toronto and New Delhi with A340 aircraft, is likely from October, the sources added.

The cargo-carrying capacity of each flight will vary between five and 10 tonnes depending on the passenger load. The details are being worked out.

In the past, the airline had operated a service to New Delhi via London Heathrow. The service, however, has remained suspended for quite some time now. It is felt that there is potential for both passenger and cargo traffic on the route, which, if exploited judiciously, will make the proposed service profitable. Henceforth, it will be only non-stop service from North America to India.

The proposal for the resumption of the service to India is believed to be part of Air Canada's much bigger plan for Asia. Thus, the airline is not only returning to its normal flight schedules on the trans-Pacific routes but is also planning to double the cargo carrying capacity on the routes by placing larger aircraft.

Under the new schedules, the weekly cargo carrying capacity on the trans-Pacific routes is to be stepped up to 100 tonnes from as low as 40 tonnes a few weeks ago when the SARS epidemic broke out in some of the Asian countries. It might be recalled that the carrier had suspended services to several Asian destinations such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore following travel restrictions in the wake of SARS.
