Economic Offences Tax officials urged to curb illegal movement of commodities Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Aug. 13 THE Minister for Commercial Taxes, Mr K. Vijayarama Rao, today asked the officials of the department to focus on areas such as `works contracts' and mining segment, besides effectively checking the illegal movement of commodities to augment tax collections. Inaugurating the two-day State-level conference of top officials of the department, he said works contracts to the tune of Rs 7,500-Rs 10,000 crore were being awarded every year. "Even after subtracting the labour component, we can still count on the segment," he said. "Despite the slowdown in the economy, the Mining Department is doing quite well. It should be reflected in our performance," he said. The Minister said that illegal movement of commodities were cutting into revenues. "Improve your market intelligence and conduct surprise checks," he advised the Deputy Commissioners. Reviewing the performance of the Department in the first four months of the fiscal, he said 12 out of 21 divisions reported a decline in revenue collections. "The nine divisions, mostly urban areas where industries are concentrated, showed the upward growth," he said. While stating that the decline was due to the severe drought, Mr Vijayarama Rao asked the officials to tighten the grip so as to achieve a respectable growth if not the targeted 17 per cent growth rate. "Don't nurse the idea that an increase in taxes would help us achieve the target." He asked the officials to gear up for the upcoming e-seva mechanism throughout the State by the end of the year. "The system has been quite popular in the twin cities. Be ready with necessary infrastructure to latch on to the system," he advised.
