New Delhi , Aug. 13

THE Department of Space has cleared the application of Media Content and Communications Services (MCCS) for uplinking Star News from India while the Home Ministry is yet to give its nod.

"The proposal of MCCS for uplinking Star News channel from India is under examination.... Clearance from the Department of Space has been received and from Ministry of Home Affairs is awaited," the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad, told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

He added that a inter-ministerial group comprising representatives from the Ministries of Law, Finance and I&B had been constituted to examine all aspects of this proposal. However, the Minister clarified that the company's proposal for Direct to Home (DTH) services was still under examination.

Later, talking to newspersons, the Minister said there was a need for a broadcast regulatory authority. He would seek the opinion of the Communications Minister, Mr Arun Shourie, and the Law Minister, Mr Arun Jaitley, on this matter, he added.
