Thiruvananthapuram , April 18

THE Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, will lay the foundation stone for the biotech park promoted by Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) at Kalamassery near Kochi on April 21. The park, estimated to cost Rs 39.54 crore, is being established with financial assistance from the Union Biotechnology Department. It is coming up on a 50-acre plot near HMT at Kalamessery.

According to Government officials, the park will first have a 10,000-sq. ft. technology incubation centre comprising 10 modules for research and development. Along with the centre, a general instrument laboratory for entrepreneurs will also start functioning.

Kinfra will get a central assistance of Rs 11 crore for setting up the technology incubation centre, which is expected to require a total investment of Rs 23.19 crore. The land outside the centre will be allotted to entrepreneurs for starting biotech-based industries.

The establishment of the incubation centre will mark the completion of the first phase of the park. The `business enterprise zone,' consisting of a pilot plant and developed plots for the industrial units, will be completed in the second phase. The park will be able to accommodate 20 industrial units.
