Puducherry: Assns protest against move on plastic ban

PUDUCHERRY: Various associations of plastic traders and manufacturers in Puducherry have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Mr V Vaithilingam protesting against the move to ban plastic cups and bags in the Union Territory.

The move to ban plastic bags, cups and other bio-degradable products would impact hundreds industrial units, thousands of dealers, workers, employees and lakhs of consumers, it said.

Associations of Plastic Traders and Manufacturers, Chamber of Commerce and Association of Small Industries, Plastic Manufacturers and Merchants of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and various industrialists in their memorandum said the ban on plastic products w ould seriously affect economy of Puducherry. The traders, merchants and industrialists had registered objection in response to the government's draft notification in this regard, a spokesman of the Association of Small Industries of Union Territory said. There should be effort for segregation of bio degradable and recyclable wastes at the point of collection of the wastes, it said.

The memorandum pointed out that expert and research bodies like the institute of packaging should be contacted to evolve suitable plans and technics. However, Chief Minister Vaithilingam recently said the administration, which had planned to introduce th e ban from July 1, had put off the move to ban the products by two months as it felt that the draft notification needed some modification in its contents. - PTI
