Search again

IF there is one thing common to all Netizens, it is the exercise of searching. For the common Internet surfer, it rarely goes beyond Google or Altavista. But those looking for something that the usual engines don't throw up need a reference point (the first Web site this week) which can guide them to that Net nook that contains what they seek.

Webmasters of sites that are packed with a great deal of data need to keep in mind the needs of visitors and the possible search terms they may employ. This week's second site features a site that explains it all.

www.searchenginewatch.com

This aptly-named site could well be the first and last stop for anyone looking for anything to do with search engines. The most striking aspect of the site is the layout, which reinforces the site's user-friendliness and easy navigability.

For those who want to take the guided tour for newcomers, there's a link right at the top, making the journey all the more simple. Otherwise, you can click on various search-related topics that are neatly displayed in a vertical format.

The site provides details regarding search engines beginning with listings of engines in various categories from general to special ones, such as MP3 search engines, exploring which is itself quite fascinating.

Then there is information on registration and submission tips, using meta tags, improving placement, knowing how to search better and what most people are searching for.

Additionally, there is plenty of dope on how major search engines work from a searcher's perspective. Users can also read comparison reviews, find out how search engines rank in popularity, and other statistics.

www.searchtools.com

This is an excellent resource for Webmasters, aspiring and current, on creating search tools for their Web site. A site that believes so much in providing information without frills that there is hardly any visual relief from the sea of grey matter. It is, nevertheless, a great stop to learn all about enabling searches on your site.

The site is neatly divided into a handful of sections with self-explanatory titles, and is a fine guide to search tools and information retrieval for Web sites, intranets and portals.

There is also a regular round-up of items of interest to those in charge of implementing search utilities, including product changes and additions, and related articles. The product listing is available in alphabetical order or by platforms such as Java, Perl, Unix, and Windows.
