Inflation up
A new series of Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with 1993-94 as the base year was introduced with effect from the week ending April 1, 2000.
The inflation rate (as measured by the new Wholesale Price Index) moved up to 6.40 per cent for the week-ended July 29. It moved up by 14 points from 6.26 per cent last week. The inflation rate for the corresponding week of last year was at 2.20 per cent.
Fuelled by the rise in the Consumer Price Index for most cities, the All-India CPI for Urban Non-Manual Employees (base 1984-85=100) rose to 370 points in July this year, up four points from a month ago.
