Bangladesh plans coastal link with Myanmar

IF THE reports doing the rounds in shipping circles are any indication, Bangladesh and Myanmar are all set to launch shipping services soon. Bangladesh, it is learnt, is keen to have a regular coastal service with Myanmar and the proposed service should connect Bangladeshs ports of Chittagong, Coxs Bazar and Teknaf with Myanmars Yangon, Akiyab and Maungdaw ports.

The proposal is likely to take concrete shape after Bangladesh Commerce Ministers visit to Yangon in January. Traders in Bangladesh see potential in the proposed service as they hope to export a variety of items such as medicines, pharmaceuticals and toiletries to Myanmar. There is no direct shipping service between the two neighbouring countries right now. The limited volume of trade between them is undertaken through Malaysias Kelang port. It is felt that India will benefit once there are regular shipping services between Chittagong and Yangon. Indian exports can be shipped to Yangon with transshipments at Chittagong.

The Singapore-based Sea Consortium had earlier announced plans to connect Bangladesh and Myanmar as part of plans to expand its network in the region. -- Our Bureau
