Why affiliation?
Sir, — The Tamil Nadu Government has recently passed an amendment to the Anna University Act, bringing in all the 225 odd engineering colleges in the State as well as Government engineering institutions under the academic control of Anna University.
BasicallyAnna University is a unitary type university like the IIT, with Internal Assessment and credit pattern of evaluation and by this move of the state government, Anna University will become an affiliating type university, thus defeating the very purpose of its creation.
TheNational Policy on Education document published by the MHRD, Government of India, clearly states that both the State and the Central Governments should encourage unitary type universities and deemed universities, autonomous colleges and discourage affiliating type university structure due to management and logistics problems associated with any affiliating type university.
There are several excellent centres of research as well as schools of engineering and technology functioning within Anna University with huge national and international funding and exchange programmes.
By this move of the State Government converting the existing Anna University into an affiliating type, the research and development strengths of several departments will be lost.
It will be humanly impossible for one university to manage 225 odd colleges.
Besides,Anna University, next to IITs attracts the best of students to its various engineering programmes through common entrance examination, and by this move of converting Anna University into an affiliating type, all students are brought into same level, without any justification for merit.
TheGovernment of India, MHRD, UGC, AICTE senior academics and administrators should debate at length about the pros and cons. The move of the Tamil Nadu government, converting Anna University into an affiliating university may be deferred till then.
