Homage to Dikshitar

A VAGGEYAKARA of a divinely exalted order, Muthuswamy Dikshitar enriched the music of the South exuberantly with his inspiring compositions in praise of deities enshrined in different kshetras. Celebrating his `mukthi' on the day of Deepavali, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha organised a homage to him at its auditorium in T.Nagar. The vocal recital of Rama Ravi featured on this occasion, was a satisfying musical event. Assisted by Nandita Ravi (vocal) and accompanied by A. G. A. Gnanasundaram (violin) and Melakaveri Balaji (mridangam), the performer presented the pieces of the composer engagingly in authentic musical versions.

The vocalist depicted the nuances of Begada classily through a planned rendition of the opening piece, "Vallabhanaayakasya". The navagraha kirtana, "Budhamasrayami" in Nattakurinji came next with stress on the raga's significant features. The singer delivered the piece, "Sri Rajarajeswari" (Poornachandrika) in a diction demonstrative of the raga's charm at a slightly accelerated pace. The sketch of Bhairavi drawn by Rama Ravi revealed her eagerness to highlight its grandeur as a classically strong Carnatic raga. She suffixed it with a placid exposition of "Balagopala" of the grant "vainika-gayaka" and followed it with a few fascinating neraval and swara exercises.

Rama Ravi dwelt on the details of Sankarabharanam resourcefully with an experience of its rigour in a traditional mould. She completed it with a sedate delineation of the piece, "Akshayalinga" extended through dainty neraval and swara passages.

Gnanasundaram's description of Bhairavi and Sankarabharanam on the violin was neat. Melakaveri Balaji (mridangam) played a pleasant misra tani in the phase of Sankarabharanam.

Earlier, Dr. V. V. Srivatsa, a composer and musicologist gave a lucid lecture on the greatness of Dikshitar.
