Soaked in bhakti

TWELVE SONGS of this Saint have been sung by N. S. Prakash Rao and Nishima in this album with J. Purushotama Sai's music supervision. Prakash Rao has rendered the compositions in Varali, Dhanyasi, Ananda bhairavi, Nadanamakriya, Suryakantham, Kalyani, Madhyamavati, Yadhukula Kamboji, Karaharapriya and Kapi with perfect diction and melody in the style of Balamuralikrishna that is truly ideal for the devotional genre. The supporting voice of Nishima for a few songs adds to the devotional mood of the programme.

Sri Nigamantha Maha Desikan was born in Thuppul 131 years after Sri Ramanujam attained Paramapadam. He is believed to be the incarnation of the Ghantamani of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumalai. He was a great preceptor who was blessed with the Hayagriva Mantra at the instance of Lord Garuda in the holy town of Tiruvaheendrapuram, one of the sacred Divya Desas.

Sri Desikan spent most of his life singing hymns extolling Lord Hayagriva, Lord Garuda, Lord Devanatha and preaching the Vedantic scriptures. S. Janaki Ramanujam, a fluent voiced experienced artiste has set the verses of the Devanayaka Panchasat in as many as 28 rakthi ragas that include Arabhi, Varali, Saveri, Bhairavi, Kanada, Begada, Nayaki, Surutti, etc., her lucid bhava-laden singing and flawless enunciation well establish her credentials as a consummate vocalist.

Srilakshmi Venkataramani on the violin, Shyamali Venkataraman on the flute and Salem S. Ranganathan on the mridangam have provided unobtrusive support in this cassette where the bottom line is Bhakti. — S. P.
