  • Quake death toll in Sichuan exceeds 14,000

Chengdu (Xinhua): A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said on Wednesday that the earthquake death toll in the province exceeded 14,000.

Li Chengyun, Sichuan's vice governor, said at a news conference that the death toll in the province, based on incomplete figures, tallied 14,463 by 4:00 p.m. Wednesday.

He said another 1,405 people were missing. In an earlier report, Xinhua wrongly put the number of the missing at 14,051 due to miscommunication with the reporter in Sichuan.

Li said relief materials such as food and quilts were being transported to victims.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Wenchuan County of Sichuan on Monday afternoon. Many other provinces were also affected by the quake.
