Kerala Education Minister waylaid by student activists

Kozhikode, June. 4 (PTI): Accusing the LDF Government of ignoring the interests of Malabar region in the education sector, activists of Students Islamic Organisation today waylaid Kerala Education Minister M A Baby, when he had arrived here to inaugurate a function.

According to police, about 35 SIO activists blocked the way of the minister even as a procession was on as part of the 'school reopening function', held to welcome students to the new academic year.

Police soon took the agitators into custody.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters, Baby said he would bring to the notice of the Home Minister, the police `inaction' despite intelligence reports that SIO activists had planned a protest.

"There were hardly five policemen present at the scene and I have expressed my anguish to the IG (North),M N Krishnamoorthy who spoke to me over the telephone', the Minister said.

Later, speaking at the function, he said such programmes would be held in different districts from the coming year.

A visual presentation of `Ente Maram'(My Tree) programme, music drama and various other cultural programmes by children were also held.
