Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS

FAQs

I have written my M.Sc. 2nd year Computer Science exam. I am in a dilemma whether to go for a job or pursue further studies. My technical qualifications include C, C++, Java, Java Script, HTML, Visual Basic and others. If I go in for a job, what kind of posts can I apply for? If I have to continue studying what kind of courses can I join? Kindly advise me.

C. V. Satyanarayanan,

Vellore

You can apply for the post of a Programmer, or a Systems Analyst. The qualifications you have are enough to get you into programming, provided you are good at it. If you are technically sound in Java you can also become a web-programmer. You may have to learn CGI scripting, Perl, DHTML, ASP in addition to Java, Java Script and HTML.

I am presently doing BCA first year and also doing GNIIT course. I have completed two semesters in GNIIT. Now I am interested in learning Java, which is a three-month course. I want to know whether it will be advisable to do Java now and then continue with the GNIIT course.

M. Naveen Kumar,

Chennai

I suggest you continue with your GNIIT course, the last semester will have Visual J++ and Visual Basic. If you have the time and energy in the evenings (presuming that you are in a morning batch) you can do a course in Sun Java. Or else you can wait for your summer holidays next year and do the Java course. A GNIIT with Java programming will definitely look good on your CV and will help you in your Professional Practice and career later on.

I am a 12th standard computer science student with a knack for writing computer programs. I have a phobia for anything connected to electricity and I am very bad at electronics. I would like to do my B.E. after Std 12 on something related to Computer- Science. I am also prepared to take up a non-computer related BE course and study computers privately. Please advice.

Vikram, A

Coimbatore

You can do a BE/B Tech course in Computer Science- that's the best option. The next option would be to take up B.Sc. Computer Science or B.Com., and do an additional 1 year diploma course from a good training institution in your second or final year of graduation. So that the course does not become obsolete by the time you finish. Till then hone your programming skills if you have access to a computer.

I am a Graduate with mathematics as my main subject and also in possession of a diploma in Computer applications. As I am planning to additional courses, kindly advise me on whether I should sign up for courses like Oracle, Visual Basic, Unix or Java, etc. Or would it be correct if I join a course in e- commerce straightaway?

C. Beena,

Chennai

You can join an e-commerce course which is comprehensive and arms you with all you need to be an e-commerce professional. As for programming skills you would require are Java and Visual Basic. CGI, Perl, Java Scripting and ASP are also necessary. Oracle or SQL server is the client-server technologies you need to know.

I have finished my B.Sc. in Computer Science. I want a career in computers. I have now got seat for MIT (Masters of Information Technology). Should I go in for programming after completing my Masters? Is this degree enough to go abroad?

Kakani Raja,

Khammam

You can go into programming after your Masters. You should also be trained in some of the latest technologies like Java and have a sound knowledge of C and C++ if you are thinking of going abroad as a programmer. Good language and communication skills are absolutely necessary if you are looking for a job abroad.

My son has done a three year advanced diploma in Software Engineering from Aptech. He is now finished writing his final year exams in BBS. What kind of opportunities will he have in future? Or can he study further? Please advice.

Usman,

He can do his MCA and also do an intensive course in an area of his choice and acquire a Microsoft certification. He could also get some hands on experience by doing projects, or a part-time job.

I have completed my B.B.A and doing my M.C.A at (IGNOU). And I have also completed Professional Diploma in Network Centered Computing at NIIT. Please give me suggestion which line I can go. I am also interested a lot in Hardware and System Administration. Whether I should do any course regarding Hardware and Administration. Please suggest.

Ravi,

Via E-mail

You can do a Diploma in Hardware Engineering. For systems administration you would need to do a course, which covers network administration, Operating Systems like NT, Unix, Linux, and TCP/IP Protocol. An MCSE in Systems Administration would be ideal.

I have finished my B.Com. from Madras University. Now I am doing my M Sc Software Applications from Bharathiar University in collaboration with SSI Ltd. I have finished my first semester. The program covers fully about Client/server technology (which is my elective). Do this course have good prospects? What type of Job I can apply? Or I need to study any other course for Internet related subjects?

Nithya, S

You can apply for the post of a Database Administrator. For this an MCPS Certification will be invaluable. As for Internet related subjects you can learn some front-end programming in Visual Basic. Visual J++ and scripting is also necessary to get into programming for the Internet.
