CAREER CLUES Ways to launch an international career
THE increase in globalisation has exposed the homegrown
professional to the international community very quickly.
Overseas assignments and job opportunities abroad are no longer
out of the reckoning. However matching global standards in terms
of etiquette and behaviour might be a challenge. Often unprepared
professionals fail to deliver what is required.
The panacea
Although the transformation isn't all that easy, it is not
impossible. If you are unprepared, here are a few tips to acquire
the necessary finesse, which can fly you over the travails _
Acquire a neutral accent, and gain a good command over the
language. This will include toning down your mother-tongue
influence (MTI) and aiming at accent neutralisation.
This might be a long process and will require a never-say-die
attitude, coupled with diligence.
Be flexible and open-minded. Do not expect the scene to be just
the way same as it was back home. Since you will be interacting
with people of different cultures, you should be open to doing
things their way. Don't be reticent to change, instead be eager
to appreciate the differences in their culture without being
judgemental.
Be warm
Even if you are an introvert, make it a point to mingle and
communicate. Be genuine, warm, and polite in all conversations.
Express your views without being dogmatic, and be eager to learn
about the nuances of the culture. Show your appreciation freely.
Get familiar
Read everything you can about the place you are visiting. Learn
about the cultural dos, don'ts and taboos and adhere to them. Be
observant, this will help you when you are unsure about what to
do, and will also help you get accustomed to the new environment
easily.
Create an impression
Remember that you are a representative of your country; so do not
act in a way that is unbecoming. Avoid using your native language
in the presence of your foreign counterparts. Stick to the
accepted dress code, and prevalent culture at the workplace.
Dress smartly at all times.
Market yourself
Since you will not have your peers or friends to vouch for your
credibility, you need to go the extra mile to create a good
impression. Sell your skills, market your abilities and make your
competencies known.
Nitty gritties
If you are looking for a job in another country, you need to have
an excellent professional track record with the relevant
educational qualifications.
Remember that a well-crafted resume will come in handy; provided
it is tailored to suit the job you are applying for.
Working for even a short stint abroad can give you the
international ilan and poise that you require. So ready yourself
now, and you'll be prepared to take on any global opportunity,
anytime.
