FINGER TIPS

Dealing with an age old phenomenon

ACCORDING to the big bang theory, the earth was formed because of an intra-spatial collision of cosmic matter.

I believe it's the same with companies. There's a head-on collision of big ideas and up sprouts a company.

Like a cyclical phase, companies appear out of nowhere and disappear again, into nothingness. Then coping becomes an indispensable survival skill and a lifeline for the stay-on employees.

But before it can get terminal, here's what you can try to stay stoic and loyal, till you also need to move on. Here's a `stay- safe-in-a-fools' paradise guide to happiness!

They're just kidding

Some of your colleagues have just got the best openings in the best company. They're excited and thrilled to make the move, but you're still there, the stubborn loyalist that you are.

You ignore the little voice inside you that says `look out for a better job!' May be things will improve, except that even unknown folks come up to you and ask `are you still getting paid?'

Wise guy move:

Shape up, research the prospective company's market status (is there any hope of recovery?), and if it's sinking fast, jump ship.

They're trying to psyche you out

It's natural for all that excitement and activity to strike terror in and cause you to panic.

Then you realise the truth: Your colleagues are just waiting to see how you react under stress and make a bad move. Hah! But you know better.

Wise guy move:

Calm down! Take a real look at and consider your options.

Are you really happy with what you have, where you are?

Only the loyalists stay, the smart ones opt for the quick buck. The ones moving out are getting a better pay, even though the hours are killing.

May be you should move too, and make hay while the sun shines.

Wise guy move:

You must be confident that it's the right move and that you are cut out for a similar job fit. Do you have a better alternative?

Is it worth the move and will you regret the move?

The ambitious march ahead

In this day and age if you're not ambitious, you're dead meat. You need to move up to progress in your career. More authority, more power, better pay!

Wise guy move:

But not everything grows vertically, some things prosper horizontally. Do you like leading, training, or cracking the whip?

May be you like being a specialist and prefer to grow so, and get paid well for your expertise.

Perhaps, it's consultancy, freelancing or starting your own company.

It's beginning to get lonely

It's beginning to get a little draughty in here. But life's good indeed. The air conditioning is on full blast, there's no queue near the loo, you can have coffee in peace, and importantly there are no distractions when you work.

However, it can get pretty lonely when you have the elevator all to yourself. It's a natural phenomenon when you're the only employee remaining.

Wise guy move:

You're stuck in a dead end job. Move before the building collapses!
