Commandments to keep that nice job going
EXPERTS recommend ten simple ways to get into an organisation. However, being retained is not easy for anyone. If you have no intentions of leaving the organisation avoid committing certain mistakes like the plague literally speaking unless you are cautious you can be easily fired too.
Avoid the fatal mistakes listed here:
Faking- the commonest mistake is to lie on a resume. Candidates presume that managements hardly have the time to conduct background checks. In fact, companies are even hiring agents to conduct third party background checks. If the information is not found authentic and genuine the candidates are blacklisted.
Letting your current company know about your job hunt. Abstain from using your official email for sending your resumes to other companies. Remember that most companies are vigilant especially with regard to your emails and instant messages. It could be a risk you are taking if the management gets to know that you are on a job hunt.
Grapevine (gossiping) is interesting but it is a sin. You will never be aware of the destination of the information and how fast it can travel across the various departments. Some innocent employees never initiate any gossip, yet bear the brunt for repeating what they heard from others. This can involve anything from losing the trust of the manager and people who matter, to losing your job.
Draw a distinct line between your personal and professional life. Attending to too many personal calls or concentrating on your personal business while at work can be very risky. By doing so you would be jeopardising your job.
Drinking at work is again a strict no-no. Employees prone to alcoholism are often shown the door.
Over-utilising official resources like the Internet also can cost your job (especially for personal purposes). Avoid the temptation to play online games or browsing sites that could be censored.
Get your figures right. An employee in a finance company added an extra zero by oversight, which cost the client millions of dollars.
Never give in to ostracising your colleagues directly or indirectly as they could walk out of the office. To be successful you need the cooperation, support and goodwill of your colleagues and the people working with you. People skills are required for different jobs irrespective of the nature of the job. Teamwork is thus the key to success and you have a major part to play in this.
The blame-game. Certain employees hesitate to take responsibility for their jobs and blame others for their mistakes. The truth is sure to surface and harm you sooner or later.
Body language matters. You might be speaking one thing and your body language might suggest something else. Carefully evaluate your facial expressions and gestures while communicating to your colleagues and superiors. Certain signs of body language can act detrimental to your career growth.
In essence, retaining a job is as difficult if not more than getting one. Due caution and conscientiousness can however help you be a deserving employee.
