Set career goals before embarking on a course

Atul, an engineering graduate, was elated at being selected by a reputed company through campus recruitment. But unfortunately, his offer was cancelled when his final year results were out and he could not clear a paper. He was not finding a job anywhere else as the companies are asking for his final results. Now Atul wonders if he will ever be able to make it big! Similar is the case of Sudha, who cleared B. Tech a year back. But she is still unemployed, as she did not ye t receive a decent offer, and the reason for it being a low percentage. Harini, another student, couldn’t get her dream job in spite of a good percentage, as she could not make her way through the recruitment process. Around 10 percent of graduates each year find themselves in Atul’s situation and many more in that of Sudha’s or Harini’s. They are shocked, perplexed and distressed.

Most of these students are the ones who were performing fairly well at studies earlier. In fact they were much ahead of their peers who are now employed.

Then what is the reason behind their present state? A careful introspection reveals that the reason is either their negligence or lack of focus.

Many students who manage to get a seat in their desired course later realise that they lack interest in the subject. Some students find themselves in streams other than those of their interest because of pressure from their parents. And the results are evident, some of them are:

• Lack of concentration and enthusiasm

• Failed attempts to change stream wasting precious years in the process

• Passing time with other activities and not doing justice to their studies

• Steep fall in the performance records

• Inability to garner the required knowledge

To get a decent placement after graduation, you must keep up your focus and enthusiasm till you achieve it.

Primarily, do a thorough introspection before you opt for a course. Have clear set goal on what you want to be and how you can achieve your goals.

Once you take up a course, give your full commitment to it from day one. Do not fall for any kind of distractions lest you should pay for them with your career. Try your best to improve your percentage as it is the one factor based on which you could be short-listed by companies in your job search.

Apart from assimilating the contents of their prescribed textbooks, students must try to gain additional knowledge in their stream.

The curriculum of a course is designed to impart the basic knowledge of a particular subject.

The job market look out for students who can cater to the requirements of their job profile, which lie reasonably above the knowledge gained from your course content. Thus, students must constantly try to keep themselves abreast with the latest technologies.

Apart from gaining the knowledge related to the field they must also work towards attaining the required softskills and practical skills.

However, if you are one of those who fiddled with your studies, don’t worry- your life has not ended.

Here are a few things you can consider:

Compromise for a lower one: If you did not get your dream offer, accept what you have got and work sincerely on it. Gain as much knowledge and experience you can and then consider a shift later.

If you do not yet have an offer in your hand, then be consistent in your job search. You can even consider taking up a project to gain the required skills.

Pursue higher education: If your percentage is lower than acceptable, consider going for higher education. Achieve a better percentage in it and you are back on track again.

Short-term courses: If your drawback is lack of knowledge in latest technologies, take up a short-term course.

Change your stream: If you think you are interested in some other stream where your credentials also cater to the job requirements, accept the offer and prove yourself.

With a proper focus and hard work you can achieve any of your goals –academic or professional.
