Award for doctor
Receiving the award
THE TAMIL Nadu Scientists Awards was bestowed on S. Rajasekaran, Head of Department of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery at the Ganga Hospital. The award was given to him by M. Thambidurai, the Minister of Education, under the discipline of Medical Sciences and Native Medicine, for his outstanding contribution in the field of Spinal Tuberculosis.
Dr. Rajasekaran's work "Clinical and basic analytic studies into the problem of spinal tuberculosis'' has broken several myths. The study revealed several innovative means to tackle the weakening of spine post-TB treatment.
The powerful drugs which cures TB, weakens the spine, and in the process leads to its collapse. This results in deformity such as hunchback and paralysis of parts below the abdomen, especially among children. Ganga Hospital in collaboration with the Tuberculosis Research Centre conducted an extensive research on post-spinal TB in children. The "Buckling Collapse'' syndrome, a special type of spine collapse, was identified during the research process. Method to identify such children was formulated and a "Finite Element Computerised Model'' was developed by the team, in association with the PSG College of Technology. This model gave a clear picture of the forces acting on the partially destroyed spine.
