Hungry lumber-jacks
FORTY FOUR million words, 32 weighty volumes, costing just about a pie less than Rs. 50,000. But then there were those willing to cough up that much for the 230 years of tradition that the Encyclopaedia Brittanica had behind it. Now, the editors of the EB have brought out a single volume gem of a reference manual by name `Brittanica Concise Encyclopaedia', holding out the promise that this would be the "ultimate desk reference'' book.
If you thought that Concise was a non-detailed version of the original, read closely !
There are 28,000 entries each 50 to 1,000 words long, 2,000 photographs, tables, charts, flags and maps, an A-Z format for easy reference and access, 10,000 special entries to help with the pronunciation of difficult words, a tad more than 2,000 pages and ... hold your breath!, costing only Rs. 2,995.
It is been just a day since the Concise has hit the bookshelves in the city and already the knowledge-hungry public have set upon the book like hungry lumberjacks at a Smorgasbord.
According to EB editors, the Concise has very much kept pace with the times containing as it does `modern' topics such as globalisation and digital technology to name just two.
If nothing, the Concise has behind it the weight of the legacy of the EB which is acclaimed to be `the oldest continuously published and revised work in the English Language'.
