Slow and steady
THE GROWING popularity of Tamil software in recent times has been amazing. `Tamil computing' as it is referred to, is making new forays thanks to dedicated efforts.
Yet, it is not the mass movement that people want it to be. Vast potential exists for the products, but computers in Government and services are not yet a way of life.
One way out could be to spread awareness about the strides made by Tamil computing software and the benefits of using them. This is the objective that is driving more and more companies to come together and conduct exhibitions. The latest in the series was the three-day Computer and Tamil Software expo that concluded on Monday.
Educationist M. Anandakrishnan inaugurated the event jointly organised by SSS Systems and Vallisoft, at the Anand Theatre Complex on Anna Salai.
Some of the recent advances in the field of Tamil computing were put on show. That includes Sangapalagai Tamil keyboards, Anu Tamil fonts and Clipart, Shree-Lipi Tamil Vairam, Vidyarthy School and College Management and Arthalekha bilingual accounting software programmes.
It was not just Tamil input devices that were available at the expo: there was LEAP Mail, software for managing e-mail in Indian languages. Currently, LEAP Mail supports 11 Indian languages.
