So even though they are on the razor's edge, the children of Chennai make the risky crossing each day.

Every day is bus day.
THEY CANNOT walk and they cannot bike, simply because there is not enough space on the road. They have a bus pass but cannot use it because there is hardly an MTC bus with enough space to get in. All they have is a two-wheeler which must do the job of a van. So even though they are on the razor's edge, the children of Chennai make the risky crossing each day. Parents say, ``In God we trust.''
The plight of the vast majority of city students, who must suffer a crushing ride to school, take part in the rat race and return home the same way, evokes little interest among the ``policymakers, educationists and bureaucrats''.
Learning the balancing act...
So where are the school buses? The schools are simply under no compulsion to even ask the students they admit, whether they would like to come by school bus after all, few school buses remain in operation!
Last year, MTC sold only three buses to schools, possibly because there were few schools that asked for buses.
Is going to school really cool?
