A new look for handicrafts complex
Lepakshi Handicrafts Emporium, a unit of the Hyderabad-based Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited located on the premises of the State Emporium complex on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, now wears a new look.
This renovated complex was inaugurated here over the week-end by Dr. P. L. Sanjeeva Reddy, presently director of the Indian Institute of Public Administration along with an exhibition-cum-sale of various handicrafts from Andhra Pradesh which will be on till July 20. The items on display include famous Hyderabad pearls, Pochampalli, Gadwal Narayanpet range of cotton and silk sarees, tribal embroidery sarees, banjara and Kalamkari wall hanging and block prints.
``Many of these items were on permanent display here. But the space was so cramped that we could not get more items from Andhra Pradesh,'' says an official in-charge of the emporium. "But we now hope to display all these and more in the renovated emporium.''
Adds the architect of the renovated emporium, Sandeep Bhowmick, "If you had come here last year, you would have certainly felt that the space was very much cramped. That is why we have not only created more space for display but also taken care to increase the circulation area.''
On display at the inaugural exhibition are Nirmal artware, Dokra, Kondapalli toys, lace, leather puppet articles, sild wood carvings and much more. The exhibition is expected to generate much interest among craft lovers from all over and the general public and help increase the earnings of artisans from the sales. A 20 per cent discount on sales is also being extended during this period.
