Improving education
Inaugurating the block
FREEDOM THROUGH education has been one of the main objectives of the Round Table, an NGO that has been working to serve the humanity. This year it is celebrating its silver jubilee.
The Coimbatore City Ladies Circle 16, part of Ladies Circle India, is affiliated to the Ladies Circle International. Over the past few years it has been working for improving the standard of education in India at all levels.
It constructed two classroom blocks at the Corporation Girls High School, R.S.Puram. K.Illango, president, Round Table, inaugurated this project recently. The block was built with the assistance from the State Government under the "Thanniraivu Thittam Scheme" at a cost of Rs. 5.37 lakhs. While the club contributed Rs. 1.62 lakhs, the Government sanctioned Rs. 3.75 lakhs.
Round Table 31 is building another block at the same school. The total cost of both the blocks is Rs. 13 lakhs. It has also built classrooms for the schools at Vadavalli under the same scheme.
This will provide a better learning ambience and benefit the students of corporation schools, (a majority of whom hail from the poor section of society).
This is the final and major project of the silver jubilee year. It also inaugurated toilet blocks at the Pacchapalayam Village Elementary School at Perur, which did not even have basic toilet facilities. This helped about 300 children in and around the area.
The Round Table also constructed a five-seater toilet block at a cost of Rs. 55,000. It also donated Rs. 25,000 for producing a film in association with the People for Animals, which has been released all over India. The film also sought to promote vegetarianism.
The club also provided a scholarship of Rs. 26,400 to Guma Devi, winner of the Mayor's Gold Medal amongst corporation schools. She is at present studying at the Tamil Nadu Engineering College, Coimbatore.
A sum of Rs. 5,000 was donated to the G.Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital to treat a boy who was suffering from leukaemia. It had so far spent Rs. 6.66 lakhs on community service projects this year.
The club members believe in serving the community through meaningful projects and on the occasion have pledged to dedicate all their services in making the city a better place to live.
