Keeping fit the wise way

Exercise wisely and save yourself troubles.

FITNESS AND stress are big issues for city residents who have to think on their feet. They are always looking for the escape route from everyday tensions.

Yet, not many can hope to get professional advice on what the best techniques are. Wrong advice could prove to be counter-productive.

Chennai does not lack fitness centres boasting of good trainers, but it is always a good idea to get advice from a doctor before joining any fitness programme.

``Exercising without proper guidance could cause more harm to the body than good. There have been several instances of persons injuring themselves as they do not follow the correct procedure,'' says Siddarthan, former trainer of the Indian Cricket Team. Now the chief trainer at Gymania, the latest fitness centre to open in Chennai, at Ispahani Centre on Nungambakkam High Road, he is keen on creating the right attitude among fitness freaks.

Like other modern gymnasia, imported exercise machines here promise to prevent and treat injuries caused by sports activities. Those suffering from knee problems, backache and arthritis get specialised workouts.

Not many entering fitness centres may be aware, but the latest tech seems to be `water rowers' for special tone ups.

Nungambakkam has evolved as a `youth' attraction with its clutch of restaurants and upscale shops. With the fitness centre thrown in, pumping iron at one of the better known addresses in the city is sure to be a fashionable activity — with some health benefits thrown in.

Tailpiece: It seems that the best tech still remains a good walk. It comes free — though the city's air pollution threatens to extract a price — and helps you think on your feet, while still exercising.
