THE POSTMAN still rings twice, a friendly visitor for those who have individual houses. Those who live in apartments barely know them.
Here in the era of technology and private couriers ensuring collection and delivery, the friendly neighbourhood postman is a rare species. The art of letter writing has been on the decline and most of the mail today is business letters or printed publications.
But, ``the postman is still the most awaited man in every household,'' points out the department.
Irrespective of the changed communications world, a big community of postmen still delivers mails all over the city, door to door, sometimes on foot. On Wednesday, it was time to honour those among them who had, in the department's view, distinguished themselves for exemplary services.
Two postmen G. Narasimhan and P.G. Rajendran were given away the `Best Postman' award on Wednesday by the Chief Postmaster, M. Dakshinamurthy. ``We have chosen them on the basis of different parameters such as punctuality, self-discipline, uniform discipline and interface with the public,'' Dakshinamurthy said, giving away the awards.
The long hours of work and the long distance of travel between home and workplace did not deter their spirit. ``We just do our job. And such recognition will help us improve and climb up the ladder,'' Narasimhan says.
