In her own league
A model turned actress -- this has been an increasingly used phrase in show business in the country. Model- stayed-model is, however, apt to describe this svelte lady, who has not been bugged by the Bollywood glamour despite a Miss India crown attached to her name and the second place at the Miss Universe event in her bag.
Manpreet Brar, the Miss India 1995, is certainly the odd one out among the deluge of Indian beauties, whose paths led straight to Bollywood. But unlike those beauties, who fade out or are obscured by the shimmering lights of the silver screen, Manpreet, by deciding to stay away from films, has created her own place in the fashion industry.
``I didn't want to do the obvious,'' she says, with not an iota of regret on missing films. The beautiful lady preferred the fashion industry, where she could infuse some dynamism into her career. Modelling continued and along with it came new assignments like compering of stage shows and launches of MNCs.
Today, she is one of the sought-after comperes travelling all over the world. She is also credited with infusing professionalism into live compering. Her spontaneity and authority over the English language has worked wonders for her. No wonder, she was chosen the spokesperson for Omega, the world-class watch company.
On the Indian fashion scene, the daughter of an Army officer says, it is on a high. It is vibrant and Indian models are brimming with confidence given the recognition. "Somehow, the world has realised that our models can fit in that league too.'' And the scenario has generated an idea in her to start a modelling academy. "It would be more about self development, etiquette and overall personality than just good looks.''
But ramp still fascinates Manpreet though she is not much into it. "I enjoy doing ramp shows more than ever. I feel more confident.'' Another thing that she is enjoying is her married life with Arjun Walia.
