Presenting Nambiar thru dance
The show turned out to be a choreographic retrospective on the celebrated poet.
IT IS claimed to be first venture of its kind on the life of Kunchan Nambiar. The stage show compiled various dance forms, poems and traditional art forms to present the life of the celebrated 18th century master of the satire in a nutshell.
Staged on Thursday evening at the Karthika Tirunal Theatre by the artistes and students of Bharathakshethra, a city-based institute of traditional dance forms, the show, ``Kunchan Nambiar'' was choreographed on the basis of various ``Thullalkathas'' of the poet.
The colourful green, red and yellow coloured crowns caught attraction of viewers during the ``thullal'' performances. Mohiniyattam, which gives importance to ``laasya'', was staged to the tunes of the famous thullalkatha, ``Kalyanasougandhikam''. The verses from the same work were selected for the Bharathanatyam performance.
The director of the centre and choreographer of the show, Jayan Bharathakshethra, says the verses from ``thullal kathas'' for Bharathanatyam to prove that these verses could also be successfully employed in other the dance forms too.
The age-old dance forms, ``Kambadavukali'' and ``Velakali'' were also staged to the tune of verses from ``Krishnaleela'', ``Sreerama Charitam'' and ``Kalyanasougandhikam''. Various scenes from the works of Nambiar were presented in a sequence during the presentation of the ballet.
One of the most popular art forms, ``Chakyaarkoothu'', in which various stories from puranas were presented with a blend of humour and criticism by the chakyaar, was also presented.
As many as 50 artistes took part in the programme, which was presented in the form of a tableau with lighting and with a black curtain forming the backdrop.
Music was scored by Biju Anchal. The centre would also stage similar ballets based on stories from the epics as well as on noted cultural personalities of yesteryear.
