When 600 stars and their fans had a great party

IF THERE were calls for "intermediate bitches", no feminist took offence. In fact, there were enough women owners and handlers around at the National Dog Show held on Sunday at Palace Grounds.
Two premier organisations Kennel Club of India and the Bangalore Canine Club held the two-day event with 600 dogs from 30 recognised breeds from all over the country. Bangalore, which has always been full of dog lovers, had its fair share.
Yelps, barks, and grunts all over, and that distinct "doggy" odour magnified many times. There were familiar breeds of dogs, and some rare ones too. While German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers, the hot favourites today, dominated the scene, there were enough Dalmatians and Dachshunds around too. Not to leave out the Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Irish Setters, Cocker Spaniels, Collies, Great Danes, Boxers, Pugs, Bulldogs, and looming large, what could only be a gigantic Saint Bernard.
Catching everyone's attention was Karnataka's pride, the rare Mudhol Hound. With its streamlined body and long legs, the Mudhol can beat any retriever or gundog from overseas.
Looking around, one could even spot breeds like the Rottweiler, Bull Mastiff, and the beautiful Saluki. There were different rings for the dogs in each breed and class to be exhibited before the judges. Ramon Podesta from Chile, Carla Molinari from Portugal, Larry Keraluke of Canada, and our own Philip John were the judges.

They surely had a tough time because each one of these canine stars were brought well-groomed and with shining collars and leashes. The "toy breeds", like some of the smaller terriers and miniature, Spitzes had their own rings for showing, and those in the back of the crowd could only see the heads of the handlers; the toy breeds were literally "down to earth".
There were stalls in plenty, including those of the show's sponsors, Bluelines, Pedigree, Kalkin India, Royal Pet, and Eukanuba.
Whether it was a collar, leash, chain, dog food, or veterinary medication, you could pick them up.
