The pangs of relationships
Michigan-born Satish Menon's maiden Malayalam film is ready. Whether it clicks with the Kerala audience or not, `Bhavum', meaning emotions of being, is most likely to add a new chapter to serious movie making in Malayalam.
A sensible, independent film, as the producer-director calls it, `Bhavum' has succeeded in exposing how badly the Kerala society has succumbed to the ill effects of globalisation.
The film captures the struggle of consciousness of a journalist and his wife's sister. His struggle, seeking to reconcile his desires with realities and truths, results in the deterioration of his relationship with his wife.
Their evolving relationship plays out as a metaphor for a society that is growing apart intellectually and emotionally in an environment where the effects of globalisation, manifesting in avid consumerism, and the influence of media as a tool for proliferating propaganda have taken root. This irreconcilable wedge precipitates in the gradual disintegration of relationships. Murali Menon, a theatre artiste, plays the lead role of Joy. The presence of Hindi actress Mita Vasisht as the sister of Joy's wife, played by Jyothirmayee, lifts the movie to an offbeat level. Through the film, Satish Menon tells a very familiar story but in an unfamiliar fashion. It has no songs or other commercialese `masala' and keeps the trademark Malayalam farcical comedy at bay. The dialogue is succinct and to the point.
