'Hush-hush' flick

ONE IN black and white and two in colour, but all depicting the grey shades of life. Surely, there is more to Japanese films than the maestro, Akiro Kurosawa, and his `Seven Samurai.' They are dark and bold, pan as they do along the colder side of life and yet, search for warmth in these icy margins of relationships, rather uncommon ones at that.

Two homosexuals, one zealously guarding the truth from the world, in love with each other and a woman with a history of mental illness, but with a great desire for children looking up to one of the gays.

The complex triangular relationship leading to a turmoil, sometimes comic sometimes tragic. Surely, hush-hush material in this part of the world, eh?

And `Hush' it is by the acclaimed Japanese filmmaker, Hashiguchi Ryosuke (the musical credits for the film made in 2001 have been given to Bobby McFerrin of "Don't worry be happy'' fame!) to be screened at the Hari Hara Kala Bhavan on December 11. The film is a part of the three-day Japanese film festival being organised by the Japanese Consulate in India, Asa Bhanu Centre, and Department of Tourism to commemorate 50 years of Indo Japanese diplomatic relations.

The 1958 film by Masumara Yasuzo tracing the bitterness and insanity of competition between companies selling the sweetest of all things, candies, `Giants and Toys' will be screened on December 10, while the 1964 Uchida Tomu directed `Fugitive from the Past,' an investigation into a boat mishap that leads to a tale of treachery, is the inaugural film of the festival.

The screening will have English sub-titles. The Mayor , T. Krishna Reddy, inaugurates the film festival today at 6 p.m.
