PANDIT VINAYAK Torvi, an exponent of the Gwalior Gharana, has carved a niche for himself in the realm of music. Gifted with a resonant voice and a rare feel for rhythm and melody, Torvi has won accolades from music lovers A versatile singer, he is equally at ease rendering classical, light classical and bhakthi sangeet in Hindi, Kannada and Marathi. Incidentally, he is an accomplished composer too.
Born on September 4, 1948, on the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, in the family of kirtankaars, in Dharwad, Torvi was said to be a child prodigy. Having started his musical education at the age of 9 under various vidwans, he went on to train for 12 years under Gayanacharya Gururao Deshpande doyen of the Gwalior Gharana and Agra Gayaki. Torvi also subsequently studied under virtuosos such as Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor, Pandit Basavaraj Rajguru, Dr. Gangubai Hangal and even today seeks guidance from Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
A dedicated promoter of music, Pandit Vinayak Torvi organises annual all-night music festivals as a tribute to his mentor Gururao through a public trust `Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha. The trust conducts youth festivals, wokshops and lec-dems. Torvi has been instrumental Connoisseurs of Hindustani music in Chennai can look forward to a treat on July 20, when Pandit Torvi will sing at a concert at the Rama Rao Kala Mantap, 111, Habibullah Road, T. Nagar, between 6.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. He will be accompanied on the tabla by Ravindra Yavagal and on the harmonium by Vyasmurthi Katti. Dattatreya Velankar and Dananjeya Hegde will provide vocal support. Entrance is free.
