THE QUESTION on everybody's lips is, is Devdas a hit? The film has had an extraordinary opening all over India, especially in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkota. And overseas, the Asian audience patronised it in the U.K. and U.S.
Producer Bharat Shah says that he will recover almost 70 per cent of its production costs even before the film opened, through its audio, Indian and overseas theatrical rights. If the film holds on for 10 days, he would have recovered his Rs. 50 crore-investment. The trade feels that the film has got mixed' reports and may start sliding from the second week.
In Chennai, the film opened to a 100 per cent collection in three theatres and will be a safe bet for its distributor.
Meanwhile, the Tamil vigilante movie Saamurai has opened well throughout Tamil Nadu, proving that Vikram's superstardom was no flash in the pan.
Yeh! Nee Romba Azhaga Irukkey has also opened well in the cities. But both the films carry average reports and may not sustain in the long run.
The surprise hit is Bend It Like Beckham, which has had a 100 per cent opening in Chennai in its first four days. The coming-of-age-kick-it comedy is slowly turning out to be a craze among the teenagers.
