'Antakshari' turns ten

Going strong: Annu Kapoor, the star of Antakshari.

IT WAS Gajendra Singh who, ten years ago, took a typical North Indian time-pass game like antakshari, so useful for the times when there are electricity breakdowns, and made it into a weekly high for Zee TV viewers.

This programme, which has had several hostesses like Renuka Shahane and Durga Jasraj try and keep pace with the frame-hogging Annu Kapoor, is now celebrating ten years on television - one of India's longest running programmes, like Siddharth Kak's Surabhi.

Zee is giving the anniversary celebrations a lot of importance. With the channel's slipping appeal in recent years, there are fewer reasons to celebrate.
