Cop tale

SHAJI KAILAS, director of well-known police films , is back with another police episode, `Shivam.' This time he chooses Biju Menon as Bhadran.K.Menon, an honest circle inspector. Shivam is in the usual mould of Shaji's movies with the hero having a go at the political nethas, from union leaders to the chief minister. The story begins with the murder of Chettiar, a one-time liquor baron, by Devarajan (Saikumar), a business tycoon who is very influential in the political circles. Bhadran (Biju Menon) takes charge as Circle Inspector and very soon is involved in a head-on battle with Devarajan. That Bhadran is sent with an ulterior motive by Sudhakaran (Murali), the local MP and a close aide of the CM to pin down Devarajan is only revealed in the later stages of the movie. The first half is fast-paced and intriguing with a mixture of action and politically motivated dialogues. However, the second fails to recreate the momentum of the first. The sequence of events in the second half is devoid of logic and tests the patience of the audience. The editing by L.Bhoominathan is far from impressive. The story, screenplay and dialogues are by B. Unnikrishanan. The film hangs on a thin storyline and this is its weakness. It does not have any songs. Biju Menon is quite excessive as Bhadran, while Saikumar as Devarajan does his part well. Nandhini has only a short role to play as Gayathri, Bhadran's wife. To put it shortly, Shivam is for those who haven't had enough of Shaji Kailas and his political movies.
