Destination IIT

Saarang, the annual fest held by IIT, Chennai, is back. A preview of the events that have been lined up this year.

THE NUMBERS sound impressive — 8000 strong participating contingent, 50000 watts of high powered music, lakhs in prize money, and a sprawling, beautiful campus to accommodate the whole jamboree! But one wonders what is so different about this year's Saarang. Year after year these quintessential geeks suddenly get charged and party for a week with the teeming thousands! This year the organisers claim to have something grander up their sleeve.

A lot will be happening, including a magic show by P.C. Sorcar(jr) a week before Saarang is officially inaugurated by leading lyricist Javed Akhtar. "In many ways", says Aditya, an organiser for the last four years, "the Sorcar show will be an apt curtain raiser to the festival, what with the thread of magic running through the festival".

The professional shows will feature the likes of Shaan (January 22), Kadri Gopalnath and Moksha (January 23), Brahma (January 26) at the open air theatre in the IIT campus.

The increased prize money and higher standards should see the best compete in sizeable numbers at all the competitions. Among the new events, there will be a Corporate Quiz to be conducted by the MBA students. AD-ZAP contest sounds interesting what with the finalists required to create an advertising campaign.

Over the years, Saarang has managed to showcase the best in the literary activities and music world. `Power chord', the western music competition is the biggest crowd puller. Choreo-nite on January 24 will feature theatre groups from all over the country. Besides, the Saarang main quiz, workshops in association with Dakshinchitra, Unwind Centre and John Britto(ballroom dancing) have also been organised.

So, gear up to witness the much-awaited cultural festival.
