A little know-how is needed to rid stains from your favourite clothing, furniture and upholstery.

STAINS RUIN clothes, furniture and upholstery. Although, it may seem difficult to remove stubborn stains, it is not impossible to do so if one knows the trick. Most stains can be removed if action is taken immediately. Older stains are harder to remove. So, the crux is quick action and identification. Check the nature of stain and the type of material. Then, first try the simplest means of removal.
To remove ink stains from clothes, rub the area with a cotton bud soaked in eau de cologne.
An easy way to remove henna stains from clothes is to soak the stained portion in hot milk for half an hour. Then rinse in cold water and clean with a brush.
Mud stains on clothes can be removed with water of boiled potatoes. If the umbrella gets mud stained, mix a few drops of washing soda in the water you use to clean it.
Carbon paper stains can be removed by sponging with methylated spirit.
Glycerine can remove tea or coffee stains from delicate fabrics and clothes. Dip the stained part in glycerine over night and wash with soap and water the next day.
Fresh tea stains can be removed if sponged with cold water immediately. Fresh coffee stains can be removed by washing with soap and water. Drying in the sun often removes old stains. A bleaching agent can be used to remove iron stains from your clothes. Rinse the garment in boiling water. Rub a cut lime over it and wash with boiling water. To remove iron rust, spread lemon juice on the stain. Rinse the material and repeat the process. If it still persists, add petrol. Turmeric stains on clothes can be removed by rubbing a dry detergent bar soap over it and leave it for an hour before washing it off. To remove paan stains, cover it with curd and wash after a couple of hours. A mixture of vinegar and salt removes stains and stale smell from flower vases. Clothes stained with hair dye should be cleaned with a piece of raw onion before being washed. Oil and ghee stains can be removed from clothes by washing in hot water to which washing soda has been added. To remove dirty stains from shirt collars and cuffs, dip them in cold water for an hour, and scrub with sugar.
For stains left by candle wax, scrape off surface wax. Place wax stain between clean paper towels and press with a warm iron. Replace paper towels. Sponge remaining stains with a dry cleaning fluid, blot with paper towels. Let dry and then launder. If any colour remains re-launder with bleach that is safe for the fabric. For bloodstains soak fabric in cold water. Add one-teaspoon salt and leave for about an hour. Rinse in cold soapy water. For stains caused by nail polish, apply nail polish remover to the back of the stain while laying fabric on white absorbent towels. Replace towels frequently. Then rinse and launder. Dab with a cloth soaked in diluted white vinegar. Egg stains can be removed by washing in cold water. Garment with make-up marks may be steeped in warm water containing a little ammonia and then washed. When you have stains of fruit juice on your clothes, stretch the fabric over a bowl and pour boiling water through. Curry stains are easy to remove. Rub the stains with ordinary soap and place it in the sun to dry. Soon the stain will take on a pink shade. Later wash it out the usual way. Wipe leather goods with a piece of cloth soaked in warm milk to remove stains on them. Perspiration will be more during summer. To remove these stains from clothes apply a little ammonia and place the dress in sunlight. Soda water is excellent for removing white stains. Pour soda water over the stains and wash.
