Scheme to promote welfare of manual workers launched

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JAN. 4. A scheme to promote social security and welfare of manual workers with contributions from motor vehicles, transporting goods and passengers, has been launched by the State Government.

All registered owners of motor vehicles operating road transport for passengers and goods will have to pay one per cent of the motor vehicles tax from January 1, 2000, towards the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers' Social Security and Welfare Scheme. The scheme will be operated by the Labour Department as per the Section 8 (B) (1) (b) of the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Work) Act of 1988.

The amount should be paid through a demand draft drawn in favour of secretary, Tamil Nadu Manual Workers Social Security and Welfare Board, and payable at Chennai. It should be presented at the office where motor vehicles tax is paid, according to a press release.
