Youth World Cup on schedule
COLOMBO, JAN. 6. Sri Lankan police and cricket authorities today
assured fool-proof security at various venues across the island
country during the 16-nation Youth World Cup cricket beginning
here on January 11.
The assurance came in the wake of a suicide bomb attack by the
LTTE yesterday in central Colombo which killed 13 people.
The tournament secretary, Mr Kushil Gunasekera, told the state-
owned daily News Today that the organisers had no plans to
postpone the under-19 event as three teams - New Zealand, Ireland
and Holland - had already arrived.
He said the Sri Lankan cricket board had already checked with
several embassies and high commissions here and it had been
informed that none of the teams had changed their travel plans.
``There is no knowledge of any country showing concern over the
incidents so far. The travel plans of the teams remain exactly
the same,'' he said.
The designated representative of the International Cricket
Council, Mr Ross Turner, has also arrived here and has been in
constant touch with the ICC chief executive, Mr David Richards,
Mr Gunasekera said.
