Maradona tests positive for cocaine

BLOOD AND urine taken from Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona after he checked into an Uruguayan hospital have tested positive for cocaine, police said. ``I have been authorised by a judge to inform you that our test (blood and urine) has resulted positive for cocaine,'' Mr. Maximo Costa Rocha, police chief for the Uruguayan province of Maldonado said. Maradona was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in the Uruguayan resort town of Punta del Este on Tuesday suffering from what his doctor called hypertension and an irregular heartbeat. The 39-year-old soccer star who led Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup final against Germany has a long history of drug abuse. Costa Rocha said Maradona had not been arrested but that investigations were continuing. A second drug test was being analysed.
