Maharashtra for action on Srikrishna panel report
By Our Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JAN. 7. The State of Maharashtra today told the
Supreme Court that it was willing to refer the recommendations of
the Sri Krishna Commission report and its conclusion - which
investigated into the circumstances relating to the 1992-1993
Mumbai riots in the wake of the demolition of the Babri masjid -
to the investigating agencies for further required action.
The investigation and the required action would not be influenced
by the ``action taken report'', Mr. Ashok Desai, senior counsel,
appearing for the State submitted before the Court.
The resumed hearing of a group of connected public interest
litigation writ petitions seeking implementation of the Sri
Krishna Commission report was before the Bench.
The Bench, comprising the Chief Justice, Dr. A. S. Anand, Mr.
Justice R. C. Lahoti and Mr. Justice N. Santosh Hegde, adjourned
this matter for six weeks.
According to the Sri Krishna Commission, the immediate causes of
the communal riots on December 6, 1992 were (a) demolition of the
Babri masjid, (b) the aggravation of Muslim sentiments by the
Hindus with their celebration rallies and the insensitive and
harsh approach of the police while handling the protesting mobs
which immediately were not violent.
The erstwhile Shiv Sena-BJP government in the State reportedly
took the stand that the Sri Krishna Commission report was biased
and did not take any further action in this regard.
