Wanted: a bold approach
Sir, - In your Editorial (Jan. 1), you have stressed the need for
evolving a political approach urgently to meet the aspirations of
Kashmiris. No responsible leader who has their confidence is to
be found.
An impartial referendum in the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley may
be conducted to ascertain whether the people want to be with
India or Pakistan or whether they are seeking autonomy. The
Hindu-majority Jammu and the Buddhist-Shia majority Ladakh can be
given union territory status. Otherwise, the Kashmir problem will
continue to be a drain on the Indian economy and also impair
human safety. It is a pity no political leader is bold enough to
suggest a solution and discuss the matter throughout our country
as Rajaji did.
M. E. Nagarajan,
Chennai
