An early resolution of the nuclear
differences between India and the United States will lead to a
``qualitatively different and better relationship'' between the
two and end the ``unnatural'' antipathy of the last five decades,
according to a top official of the Clinton administration. At the
heart of the proposed reconciliation is an American
acknowledgement that India's May 1998 nuclear tests cannot be
undone and that India's security interests go beyond the
Subcontinent.
'Future destination' of Karmapa under study
With reports pouring in of a serious
threat to the life of the 17th Karmapa, Ugyen Trinley Dorje, by
some people said to be of Chinese agents who have infiltrated the
ranks of the Tibetan community here, Tibetan officials and
security agencies are exploring the possibility of shifting the
Karmapa to an isolated abode till a final decision is taken on
his status in India.
Major, three militants killed in shoot-out
An Army Major, three militants and a 10-year-
old girl were killed in the night-long operation at Rashtriya
Rifles (RR) sector headquarters in Anantnag, which was stormed by
militants on Wednesday evening. Two Army personnel were also
injured. The Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has owned responsibility for
the attack.

Tibetan officials yet to come to terms with 'crisis'

finding it extremely difficult to handle the ``crisis'' which has
confronted them since the arrival of Ugyen Trinley Dorjee from
China on January 5.

The tension between the BJP's desire to
assert its separate identity and its equally pressing need to
submerge this in the larger interest of the coalition it is
leading, is palpable in the final version of the declaration
adopted at the party's National Council session on December 29 in
Chennai and released here today.

one sentence in the first draft of the Chennai Declaration -
``each and every activist of the party must fully understand that
the BJP has no agenda other than the common agenda of the NDA'' -
that virtually caused a revolt in the BJP before it was thrown
out of the document by the National Council, has once again
surfaced in the six-page ``glow lines'' of the document released
to the press here today.
